Daniel Ostling
Visiting Professor
Daniel Ostling is a two-time Tony Award-nominated scenic (and lighting) designer based in Los Angeles and Taipei. He has been an ensemble member of Lookingglass Theatre Company in Chicago since 2003. He is a long-time collaborator with fellow Lookingglass ensemble member Mary Zimmerman, with whom he has designed more than 30 productions including the recent world premiere opera Euyrdice (Metropolitan Opera/NYC, LA Opera) and Metamorphoses (Broadway, 2003, Tony Award nominated for Best Set Design).
He has worked at numerous regional theaters across the United States including the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM), the New York Shakespeare Festival in Central Park, Lincoln Center, The Public Theater, Steppenwolf (Chicago), The Goodman (Chicago), The Mark Taper Forum (L.A.), Arena Stage (Washington, D.C.), Berkeley Repertory and The Guthrie Theater (Minneapolis), among many others.
Internationally, Ostling’s work has been seen in Japan, Italy, Taiwan, Australia, the United Kingdom, Canada and China.
His opera designs have been seen at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City; Los Angeles Opera; Teatro alla Scala in Milan, Bunka Kaikan in Tokyo; Lyric Opera in Chicago; and the Barbican in London.
Ostling was a tenured associate professor in the MFA program at Northwestern University from 2003-2011. Prior to that, he was a tenured professor at Loyola University in Chicago from 1997-2003. In 2021, he served as a visiting professor at National Taiwan University in Taipei.
