Phil Wagner received his Ph.D. in film & television from the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television in 2016. Wagner’s articles have appeared in Film History, Film & History, Afterimage and Senses of Cinema, and he has contributed chapters to AFI’s The Epic Film in World Culture and Blackwell’s recent A Companion to Fritz Lang. His dissertation, “Research, Rhetoric, and the Cinematic Events of Cecil B. DeMille,” is currently under review for publication. At UCLA TFT, Wagner has taught “Stylistic Studies of the Moving Image” and the graduate seminar “Paramount: Style, Authorship, and Institutional Memory in the Studio Era.” Wagner has also helped manage film- and photo-related collections at UCLA’s Chicano Studies Research Center and has authored the finding aids for a number of these, including the archive of Raphael Ortiz, the multimedia artist who gained recognition at the vanguard of the 1960s Destructivist movement with his manifestos, experimental collage films and piano destruction recitals.
